In His Own Words
About him
Nothing AI in here, all my own words: whether or not that’s a good thing remains to be seen!
Gentle, funny, kind, generous. Unfailingly honest, loyal: determined to see the best in folk, but even so neither labrador nor pushover. Hugely shy, invariably self-deprecating (OK, OK: except here, obvs): self-aware and congenitally incapable of taking myself seriously, with a caustic eye for anything ridiculous or pretentious - especially any of my own foibles. Sense of humour dry (no sh*t, Sherlock?) bordering on arid.
Very bright, sharp, but I do my best to wear that lightly, and – purely in the interests of balance, you understand! – can sometimes be as dense or daft as they come. I’ll certainly challenge you, tease you – but never, ever maliciously – and make you laugh, albeit not always when intend to. No kind of party animal at all, but still engaging and sociable if I can hear myself think.
Happier nearer home, nowadays, yet still curious about and engaged with the wider world: so with the right incentive, never say never. Canine compatible and feline friendly: not entirely sure about small people, though.
I’m afraid those ‘old school’ manners (walk on the outside, hold doors etc) are ingrained, but otherwise my attitudes are far younger, more flexible than that might imply. Red-blooded, for sure, but not solely testosterone-powered. Body sometimes creaks a bit, but hey, it still works.
Well read, in more than one language: usually have a book on the go. Professional-standard classical musician, but there’s far more than that on the playlist. Other likes? Wordplay, silly/cryptic humour: walking on beaches, moors. Owls. Cricket (as much for the minds it engages as the game itself). Old cars, trains (sorry). Interesting grain in wood. Loads more, if and when.
And into Room 101? ‘Reality’ anything. ‘Sleb’ culture (a contradiction in terms?). Rudeness, lies, intolerance, unfairness. Farage and all who sail in him (oops, segue?). Misuse of apostrophe’s...
About his ideal match
OK, computer, take away all the wrong answers!
My ‘significant’ backstory is far more eclectic than extensive, and of course I can only provide half the recipe anyway: I’m well aware that adding your ingredients might create something I’ve not even thought of. And that’s part of the point, surely?
You’d find me at my best if you were bright and able to hold your own. No pressing need to be lugging a huge Scrabble score around after your name, street smart can work just as well: but either way I’d love for us both to be able enjoy jumping seamlessly between serious and silly, to share and discuss ideas, broaden horizons – that sort of thing.
I spend a lot of time arranging/conducting classical music, so if you have any interest or involvement in, appreciation of the kinds of noises which don’t come to an abrupt when someone trips over the mains lead, well that would be a Good Thing. Top that off with a liking for words, an offbeat sense of humour and we’re getting warmer…
Active is welcome, too. Maybe not exclusively sporty, but (say) up for a decent long walk: moor, coast path, new city perhaps? Suitable incentives – pub, ice cream? – might even be available if you ask really nicely: and if required I can throw a mean dog stick, me…
If you’re a bit self-sufficient, have your own things you want to do, are happy to let me do mine, not be panicked because we’re not always sharing 24/7? That’s a grand place to start.
I’ve nothing new to add to that old trope about chemistry being the solution (not even, it seems, a halfway decent pun!) so best I stop rambling now. If my rather offbeat, subclause-infested, slightly tongue-in-cheek attempt at self-portraiture hasn’t driven you to drink or distraction, then I’d love to hear from you: but please, send a message, don’t just click and leave me to guess! If I’m not for you, then thanks for dropping by, the courtesy of sticking with this to the bitter end, and I hope you’ll soon find someone who is. Good luck out there!
